Another great day in the Sassafras River

Thursday, Sept 11th – We start out the day with remembering today, 13 years ago...we all remember that day all too well! For those that were lost...

In the distance, we hear thunder, but there are no clouds in the area that we can see. The thunder continues throughout the morning, there is no consistent frequency of boom, boom, boom. We guess it’s a 9/11 remembrance or a re-enactment of the war of 1812…we go about our day.

Around 10:00, we lift anchor and move 5 minutes upriver to grab a mooring ball for the night; we relax to enjoy the warm sunny day and call our son Ryan. He said it was only 10C (50F) while we are close to 80F...we hope we stay ahead of the cold weather. After lunch, we drop the dinghy and go ashore to register with the yacht club; Julie and I go prepared to use the facilities...bathing suit in hand. Kathy is in the office to greet us; we chat with her for a while. She only works a couple days a week and this is her first week; retired with 3 kids in their 30’s. She told us they all wanted to grow up and move to the big city where they could own a house with a side-walk. However, they all chose to live within 6 miles of Kathy and her husband. I inquired about the thunder we hear in the distance, Kathy informed us it is underground explosions/bomb testing by the military…this went on all day (and the next day)!

With the tides, the water level is constantly changing here; the wind also has a large effect…today, all the docks here in Georgetown are just above the water level. This is due to the strong south wind pushing the water up the Chesapeake…it’s at least 1.5 feet higher than high tide the day before.

Julie and I take a quick dip in the pool (it seems all the marina’s around here have pools), then

shower and use a little wifi. Heading back to BoomDeYada, we take a slow dinghy ride around the area and stop at a nice little beach exposed in low tide. Julie enjoyed feeding the assortment of

Ducks on the private beach.
ducks. Back to the boat for a cocktail before heading for dinner at The Signal – winner of the best crab cakes on the Chesapeake for the last two years…and you can order them with no breading…they were the best I ever had and I’m not a big fan of crab cakes.
