August 24th, Sunday – We awoke at 06:00 to catch
the out-going tide, but the fog was thick enough to make us decided to change
plans again…we will wait six hours for the next high tide and so that meant we
went back to sleep.
Up again at 09:00, we puttered on a few things and studied
the charts. The wind picked up and it was heading our direction so we left an
hour earlier than planned, opened up the forward sail to achieve a greater
speed against the current…sun was out and it looked promising to make it all
the way down to Nyack Boat Club. We passed West Point Military Academy,
Indian Point Nuclear Plant (where the engine hiccupped again), Haverstraw and Croton Bay where many boats were anchored…several people told us it was a great anchorage, but we were heading for Nyack, just a few more miles further down river…we had the current with us too!

A couple days previous, we met Steve Beringer and his wife
Patti briefly on the dock the evening we arrived at Hop-O-Nose Marina in
Catskills, NY. They were excited about our adventure and offered us a guest mooring
ball at their club, Nyack Boat Club. We arrived and Steve pointed us to our guest mooring ball...in the mooring field of over 100 boats. They have been the most generous people,
and as we were communicating our arrival, they invited us back to their
home, with some of their friends, for a BBQ, swim and hot tub. It was tough to
turn down, but it was our only opportunity to meet up with a friend, Steve
Schlate. His wife wasn’t feeling well so it was a steak dinner for three in the
cockpit and then I took Steve back to dock in our dinghy. We will get together
with Steve and Patti Beringer tomorrow night.
