A day in the Big Apple

August 27th, we have been having great weather, another hot and humid day in NYC. Compared to all the other people we have met, New Yorkers are different. It takes a lot to tear down their seemingly unfriendly nature. Everyone we met north of NYC have been very friendly and offering assistance.

The Hudson River Waterway taxis traversing the river at about 06:00 making for a rocky ride the last 2 hours of our sleep. Anand had a 09:00 business call that went well for him and we hung out on the boat until noon waiting for slack tide (the time between changing of the tides when the current is low) to take Anand ashore. We walk with him towards the city streets close to where he parked and say our good-byes. Julie and I start to walk from 79th St. to 46th St., after a block we realize how far that is and hail a cab ride for $15; otherwise we would have been dripping with sweat from the humidity.

We arrive at 1180 Avenue of the Americas (a.k.a. 6th Street) cool and relaxed, get through building security and a good friend Peter Lennon greets at the elevators. He has to go meet with his boss so we are somewhat free to visit people around the office. Steve Schlate, who visited us onboard for dinner in Nyack, has a boxed 1L bottled of Ron Solera (rum from Mexico) for me and the official Scrabble dictionary for Julie (he suggests that now we’ll be able to keep a closer eye on Dwayne’s scrabble words)…Steve S. has been so very helpful along the way offering to take us for groceries and providing great detail via email for any question we had. Steve takes us to meet Tina Mattic who I have had several conversations with over the years but never met her…she is as sweet a person in real-life. Peter comes back to us with our iPad Air in-hand, the one we ordered to his home a couple weeks ago. Meet and greet others and Peter walks Julie and I around the corner to direct us to a restaurant for lunch and then departs as we will see he and his wife later for dinner. Julie and I grab lunch and eat in a small park with hundreds of office works, then jump in a cab back to the boat for an afternoon siesta before Peter and Heather arrive to see the boat and go for dinner.

Julie, Heather and Peter at the 79th St. Boat Basin Cafe
When Peter and Heather arrive, the waves are three feet and the current is moving quickly, so Julie and I take the ½ mile dinghy ride into the Basin and a boat tour will need to happen another time. They were there to greet us as we exited the security gate where Peter had a gift of Ron del Barrilito (Puerto Rican rum…how great is that!)….he said we looked like Navy Seals bouncing over the waves as we approached. Cocktails on the boat were now drinks at the Boat Basin CafĂ©, which overlooks the river. Peter invites us to Long Island for a day on the beach Saturday...sounds great as long as we are still here in NY as we are watching for a weather window to start on our way to Cape May. Dinner was in mid-town, a cab is needed.
Dinner at Lobster City
Using the Uber app on his iPhone, a black car (nicer than a yellow taxi) is just around the corner and will meet us in 10 minutes. Peter was able to visibly see the cabs around on the map and hail one electronically…cool. Off to Lobster City restaurant; a nice bottle of wine, lobster & steaks and its already passed 22:00. We say good night, Julie and I grab a cab back to the boat and the reflective tape on the mast pays off again!
