Ten hour jump to Coburg - July 17, 2014

A couple of things, this blog is about a sailing adventure/live-aboard’s/cruisers; it’s not about the history of every little town we stop in or good recipes…I will try to mainly focus on sailing and everything that a sailor/cruiser needs to do or think about each day. Our journey is not so much of a vacation to get away from it all; it’s more a way of life with its own stresses, challenges and blunders.

We recorded the opening stats for this journey – Engine hours-5365 (pretty high for a boat diesel engine I’ve been told), Total Nautical Miles (nm) 7429 as recorded by our speed instrument.

We were up at 7:30am, quick shower and watched our son's video of our departure the day before…we both had tears and the first few hours were quiet, barely a word spoken. We had departed ABYC at 8:15am, sunny with lite winds. At least the winds were going our way but not enough to make any speed; we motored with the sails up only giving us an extra half knot of speed for a total of 6knts average. Julie went down below to prepare a couple of sandwiches for lunch – bread! For the first time in years, I had my first sandwich. I discovered a year ago and Julie just recently – that we are both gluten intolerant, so like the bread we are both gluten free.

The winds and the seas grew a little as the day went on; we quickly secured things below as following seas (wind and waves coming from behind us) makes for a rolling ride, but nothing too uncomfortable. With the sun heating up the cockpit, we fired up the tunes (Jimmy Buffett of course) and poured our first drinks (rum of course!). It was a great day to relax and work on our tans.

I had recently replaced all engine hose clamps and noticed one leaking so I tightened it up and kept going. Arrived in Coburg, Ontario at the Coburg Yacht Club around 5:15pm, at the visitor dock where we stayed for the night with no water to fill our tank and no electricity…not a problem, we’re learning about our energy consumption and what it takes to replenish it. We checked in at the office and went in to town for dinner. Coburg has a great old downtown area, it almost became the Nation’s capital until the powers at be decided on Ottawa. Our friend Adam has a cousin that recently opened a restaurant called 92 King, location and name are the same. What a great meal!! Highly recommended if you’re ever in Coburg!!
