Sunrise in Herring Bay

It was a beautiful sunrise as we got up and headed out around 08:00.

Depending on the location of your anchorage each night, it can be several miles from the heart of Chesapeake Bay before you turn south to continue on again. Today was a 30 mile day down the Chesapeake to Solomon’s Island and it was one of those beautiful sailing days…sunshine, good winds and time to relax and enjoy.

to hail us by our boat name on the VHF, as our path today took us part way into the shipping lane (which isn't a wrong thing). But there was another cargo ship heading south behind us…in the 15 minutes it would take him to reach us, the south bound ship, the northbound ship & ourselves would all meet…I veered east 20 degrees.

Solomon’s Island was about an hour up the Patuxent River off the Chesapeake in Back Creek, where boats and marinas lined the shores. We snaked our way up the creek, dropped anchor near other cruisers and watched more float on in...it was like we were moving in a pack. One of those boats was a catamaran called “Exhale”, members from our yacht club in Toronto. They dropped their dinghy to take their dog to shore and dropped by for a brief chat to discuss travel plans. We were heading out early, so we didn't unwrap our tightly wound dinghy to visit or go ashore.
