Boom De Yada: Friends from Long Island, NY

George Town has many taxi's; I had arranged for a nice new black Escalade with air conditioning to pick up Peter and Heather Lennon from the airport. After an hour wait Peter emailed me, Bernice was a no show...oh well, we're in the Bahamas. So easy going Peter just grabbed another taxi, then the water taxi. We had fresh Pina Coladas ready for their arrival. I met Peter at my last contract job at Misys International in New York City. We became close friends very quickly as Peter is one of those generous good souls. Last year when we were coming down the coast, Peter came to Staten Island to pick us up one morning to spend a day with he and his beautiful wife, Heather. They live and keep their power boat on Long Island, NY. We talked about plans for their visit to the Bahamas. They arrived mid-April for 5 days and were kept busy seeing the sights and relaxing too. Their timing was prefect for the local Family Island Regatta where the locals race old style Bahamian sail boats. The sail is much larger than the boat so they need pry boards that slide out 6' over the side for crew to sit on to counter the lean of the boat. The pry board slides across the boat as they make their turn. We were constantly moving out on the board, then back in, then over to the other side...you don't want your fingers or toes getting in the way during these moments of chaos. Three crew (fellow cruisers) went overboard holding on to the rail of the boat as others pulled them back aboard while continuing the race...what a hoot!! We swam on the ocean side, ate at the weekly pig roast, partied with other cruisers, snorkeled and just enjoyed the company...we'll see you guys next season!
